Pet: Penelope

posted by Robin on 08/28/2009 at 6:15 p.m. Pacific

I didn't see Penelope when I first walked in the door - I called her, heard a meow from somewhere, but couldn't see her! Finally found her sitting on one of the dining room chairs, half under the table. I think she just felt like it was a nice cozy spot! I sat on the floor with her for a while, then started making her lunch, so she came running for that. She's doing fine but I bet she'll be so happy to see you! Hope you have a good trip home.

Penelope greeted me with a big "Meow!" from a perch just inside the front door, but she wasn't complaining, just saying hello! She gobbled her wet food and then jumped up on the desk in the study - I think she was showing me how she helps you when you have work to do. Then I opened one of the small shades behind the couch to let some sun in, which she loved - she plopped right down and started soaking up sunshine! pretty Penny

The kitties are pretty good about taking their Fortiflora on kibble - they really like that stuff! Lewis would not play today, but both of them got some brushing so they will look nice for you when you get home. Penny posed to show you how pretty she is! I know they will be happy to see you.

A sad day for the kitties, as they consumed the last of the canned food and now have to rely on kibble only! Tragic. Lewis vomited some kibble to let me know what he thought of the situation, but by the time I left, they were both munching contentedly.

Today Penelope met me at the door, but I happened to have a little bottle of Gatorade in my hand that I wanted to put in your freezer for 15 minutes, so that was enough to counter any thoughts she had of escape. Once I was in the door she led me very purposefully to the downstairs bathroom, so I turned on the tap, and she drank her fill of delicious water - ! And then she was ready for lunch. She stays close to me when I'm there, and seems to be doing just fine.

Pets: Lewis and Penny

posted by Robin on 08/25/2009 at 7:00 p.m. Pacific

Lewis was a little calmer today, although he did chase after a few toys and wrestle with them! I tried to give Penny more attention, since she got shortchanged yesterday when Lewis was showing off. I brushed her quite a bit, although not enough - her coat is SO thick! Then Lewis started looking resentful so I brushed him a little as well. Those two! Just like brother and sister...

Penelope continues to be pretty relaxed - just a yawn, stretch, and a meow to greet me from her comfy spot on the couch when I walk in. She's eating well - even the kibble - and headed right for her cardboard box when she could see me getting ready to leave, so I sprinkled a little more catnip in for her!

Pets: Lewis and Penny

posted by Robin on 08/24/2009 at 3:50 p.m. Pacific

Last day of Penny's meds, and both kitties seem just fine. In fact, Lewis is feeling a little TOO fine. I was feeding Penny the last of her med/food and heard Lewis meowing in the other room, followed by some thumping and running. I found him crouched in the living room with a crazy-cat look on his face, so for about 10 minutes I lobbed toys in his direction, which he attacked with gusto, sometimes chasing and sometimes just wrestling them to the floor. It was hilarious. I have never seen this side of Lewis! Very, very cute. I couldn't help laughing, but then he looked at me with an injured expression until I stopped and was properly serious about his impressive hunting and killing skills.

Today Penelope was so relaxed that she didn't even get up to greet me - just meowed hello from the couch! She did stretch and hop down as soon as I got in the door and unloaded my backpack. She was again quite interested in (1) tap water and (2) wet food, although after she ate I did get her to focus on the laser light toy for a bit (although she wasn't too excited about chasing it). I put a catnip mouse in her cardboard box, and when I left she was purring and rubbing against the box, looking quite happy!

Penelope greeted me at the front door, as predicted, but she didn't try to make a break for it - she seemed happy to have some company, especially company that was going to give her some wet food! She supervised me carefully while I fixed her food, but only after she stared fixedly at the kitchen faucet so I would know she wanted some water from the tap. (Does she only do that with me??) She ate very enthusiastically and then just hung out with me - no pining to go outside. She seems happy and content!

I spent lots of time with Penny and Lewis this morning. Penny, especially, wanted lots of loving. In the evening, it had switched, and Lewis was the cat wanting some extra attention! I think I roused them from a nap this evening when I arrived, but their appetites woke up pretty quickly. They are both such lovey cats.

Lewis and the exercise ball

I visited pretty early this morning and it took the felines a while to wake up - ! - especially Penny. But they found their way to the kitchen and enjoyed their breakfasts. It was a sunny but not hot day, so I opened lots of blinds to give them some sun to bask in. Lewis, who is usually not fond of the camera, sat for several photos - I think he wants to be sure you don't forget what he looks like! My evening visit was later than usual (the visits were almost exactly 12 hours apart today) so they were very hungry for dinner, and even Penny gobbled up meds and all with no hesitation.

Who is it that started the rumors that Lewis is shy? Both visits today he wound himself around my feet and begged me to scratch him under the chin. He's such a good cat! A good eater, too. I admire the way he carefully licks all around his bowl to clean up any drops of wet food. Penny, of course, is a total lover. After she finished her medicine this evening, we sat on the couch and I tried all my cat pet moves on her. She purred like a motor boat.

Penny enjoying the sun

This morning was sunny and cool, so I opened the front blinds for a while to let the sun in. Penny hopped right up onto the couch to enjoy it, as you can see from this photo! Angie came over with me on the evening visit to meet the kitties - Lewis wasn't that excited to have a visitor, but he didn't hiss at her, which is pretty good for a first meeting with Lewis. And Penny of course was happy to have another person to pay attention to her and tell her how pretty she is! They both are doing well and seem quite content.

Pet: Bitty

posted by Robin on 08/19/2009 at 7:40 p.m. Pacific

Bitty knows I am the food lady and moves right into position as soon as I walk in the door! She was quite friendly today, waited patiently while I rinsed out the dish and even let me pet her before I fed her. The rest of our time was spent either playing with the tassel or with her rubbing against my hands and legs and getting petted (she makes it clear which it is she wants). She really got me with her big blue eyes when it was time for me to leave - if a cat can have a sad face, she had it! So of course I fell for it and stayed a little bit longer, then finally made my escape by reminding her there was some food left in her bowl. She is adorable. She'll be so happy to see you! And we're definitely happy to visit her anytime.

Penny wanted more coaxing again to eat her med-food this morning but by this evening she was ready to gobble it! My visit was a bit later in the day, plus I think they both really like that Fortiflora. They seem just fine, and Lewis even rubs against my legs when he's NOT looking for food, so I guess he really does like me! Today is the hottest day of the week but the house feels very comfortable, and the kitties are very relaxed. It's nice visiting them twice a day - we get into a good rhythm!

Pet: Bitty

posted by Robin on 08/18/2009 at 9:10 p.m. Pacific

I think Bitty used up all of her shyness in her first two visits with Angie, or maybe she is just getting used to new people coming to see her - ! Anyway, she was pretty fearless with me - hopped right up on her chair for dinner before I could even put my backpack down, and let me pet her while she was eating. Then she came and very seriously watched me scoop the litter box, I assume to be sure I was doing it right! Then we played with the tassel for a few minutes but what she really wanted was to rub against my hands and be petted - she purred and purred. What a little sweetheart!

Two good visits with the felines today, and they both got all of their meds and seem to feel fine. Lewis continues to greet me like his long-lost favorite person, although he is not fooling me - I know it's all about the food! He's pretty pleased to have wet food twice a day. Penny is more coy about the food, or maybe her meds make it taste funny - she will eat it but likes to be coaxed, so most both visits were taken up with encouraging her to chow down. No signs of illness though - they both are doing well.

Bitty on the sleeping bag

posted by Angie on 08/17/2009 at 7:55 p.m. Pacific

As you can see from the photo, Bitty is easing out of her hidey hole. She's moved from under the table to the more comfortable sleeping bag. But she still won't sit in my lap. We played with the leather tassel again, and she let me give her a treat. I think her friendliness was because of the extra good job I've been doing cleaning out her box.

Bitty was shy today, but I think she's warming up to me. I found a leather tassel in the hall, so we played with that for a while--me on the floor and Bitty in her hidey-hole in the back room. Fortunately, she's a gal who likes her chow (Bitty and I share that feature), so when I went to feed her she jumped up on her chair for dinner and let me scratch her behind the ears. She's such a pretty girl!

Pets: Aja and Gaucho

posted by Angie on 08/15/2009 at 8:00 p.m. Pacific

Gaucho is getting more and more friendly--and of course it's impossible for Aja to be more friendly, he's already Mr. Personality. I did what you suggested and put a few treats in the mouse-chaser game for him, and he had a great time digging them out. Then we played with a wand, and after a few minutes he hauled it away, into the kitchen, to attack by himself. Meanwhile, Aja was pretty mellow. He looked out the window and ate some dry food. They're both such great cats.

Today Kiku tried his hand at the bird game, until Stella leapt in and took over--she loves those aerial assaults. Meanwhile, Jackson managed to give himself a shower while drinking from the faucet. They are all well and happy. Although I know the kitties will be thrilled to have you home, I'm going to miss them!

Pets: Aja and Gaucho

posted by Angie on 08/14/2009 at 9:05 p.m. Pacific

Lucky me! Gaucho was out when I came over, and although he was cautious, he stayed in the living room. He watched me, suspiciously, as I tried different toys with him, but as soon as I went to pay attention to Aja, he completely sniffed the area where I was. Aja, on the other hand, had a cat attack and ran through the house like his pants were on fire! It was hilarious.

As usual, the visit started with all of us sitting on the couch for a while so that everyone gets some attention! All so sweet.Jackson and catnip Then Jackson and Stella accompanied me to the basement for chores, food, and special water, while Kiku sat peacefully on the couch upstairs. Everyone seemed pretty mellow today - even Stella did only a few jumps after her toy. This is my last day with the kitties (Angie has them tomorrow) so I gave them some fresh catnip toys as a special goodbye from me - the photo shows just how relaxed and happy Jackson was!

posted by Angie on 08/13/2009 at 7:05 p.m. Pacific

Once again, Kiku was the winner in the race for the lap. After ten minutes or so, though, he headed downstairs for a snack, and Stella took his place. Instead of jumping up on the couch from the front, she landed on the top of the couch from an Olympic-style leap from behind! Meanwhile, Jackson lounged on the floor, giving Stella the stink eye. Of course, he got his lap time, eventually, too. We played bird again, with Stella getting most of the action, as usual. They're happy, loving cats.

What great cats--and with such different personalities! Kiku almost beat me to the couch, he wanted a lap to sit on so badly. Jackson played "longest kitty in the world" lounging on his belly, then decided he needed to drink from the faucet for a while. Stella is such a huntress. We played a lot of bird (although thanks to Kiku I had limited mobility). I told them you were on vacation and were seeing a lot of birds, which seemed to interest them (especially Stella). I even hinted that some of the birds were slow and flew low. Now I think they understand why you're away.

More hunting Da Bird today. Stella has some amazing jump moves! The boys just sat and watched her in awe. Then Jackson took off for the basement to sit hopefully by the sink, and Kiku chased a catnip mouse around the room (he's got some good moves himself - he prefers dribbling to fancy jumping, however.) This picture shows him taking a well-deserved break from his strenuous work. It's tough to be a cat.

Today the cats were all very playful, especially Stella, who was flying around the house chasing a Da Bird toy! She is quite the mighty hunter. The boys would play along for a while but they found it to be tiring work. Jackson would much rather play in the sink, and Kiku would much rather sit in my lap. Forget having three arms to pet them with - I need a couple of clones so I can keep each one entertained with their favorite activity!

No Jackson-in-the-box today! All three kitties just wanted to sit on the couch with me as soon as I walked in the door. Kiku is the lap kitty, Jackson rubbed yellow and white fur all over my backpack, and Stella sat right next to us. After a while I had to get up to do the chores, and I opened some windows and the door to get some air in. They all liked that a lot - each became quite transfixed staring out at the world and sniffing the summer air! Everyone is doing fine.

Both Stella and Kiku came right out to greet me when I arrived, but no sign of Jackson at first...then I heard some rustling from the living room, and in a few moments Jackson's head appeared from deep within one of the moving boxes!Jackson in the sink He clambered out looking quite pleased with himself. The kitties have hit the jackpot for great hiding places! Everyone wanted pets, then everyone accompanied me to the basement to do chores. When I was about to leave after doing the food/water/litter routine, I noticed Jackson sitting expectantly in the sink, so I ran the water for him while he lapped it up and got his paws nice and wet. What a character. When we got back upstairs Kiku climbed right in my lap and refused to move until he spied Jackson having too much fun with a catnip toy...Stella stays close and will come in for petting whenever her brothers are otherwise occupied. They're all doing great!

posted on 08/04/2009 at 7:50 p.m. Pacific

SO much cooler today, so Lily got three good walks in. She seems to be the perennially happy pup. I think the kitties are ready to have you back - Lenny is extra affectionate, wants lots of lap time, and Ruby is not as enthusiastic about her food as she was earlier in the week. She still likes it when I approach her and ask her a question, though: "Meow, meow, meow, etc. etc. etc." She has a lot to say for herself, but only when asked - very cute! Anyway, have a safe trip home - you'll have three excited furries waiting to see you!

posted on 08/03/2009 at 7:50 p.m. Pacific

This morning when I arrived the toy basket had been overturned, and when Lily and I got back from our walk, Ruby was sitting in the middle of the spilled toys, which I figured was a message that it was playtime. I discovered that her favorite toys are the ones that actually look like mice - those she will chase, catch, and kill by shaking them to death! She watches balls and jingly things roll by, and does not appear to be interested in strings - she looks at me as if she is saying "Robin, that's a string, not a mouse tail, do I look stupid?" Very cute. Lenny came over to see what we were doing but was feeling too dignified to take part. Good walks with Lily - the temperature is slowly decreasing, making walks more bearable each day!

Happy Blue

It's finally back to bearable temperatures, although definitely still hot. Today Blue wanted to go to the park, and once there we paced from tree to tree to tree, around and around the park - and I seriously do mean we visited each tree at least three times. It was actually excellent squirrel viewing so for him it was pretty thrilling - I prefer walking through interesting neighborhoods, but it's Blue's walk, not mine! And I always have a blast watching him - for such a goof, he can get pretty intense when he's on the trail of the elusive Great Gray (squirrel). He looked pretty happy when we got back, so I think he enjoyed himself.

Morning Glory in bloom

I'm not sure if your morning glories were blooming when you left, but they are looking so beautiful that today you have a picture of them instead of the animals! It remains very hot, but we had our extra-long visit this morning so Lily got an extended walk to make up for the shorter ones she's been getting. The kitties have excellent appetites, and they especially like it when I open the window in the morning to get some fresh air in. They both stand underneath with their noses in the air! All is well.

Still hot, so Lily and I had a good walk in the morning but kept it short the rest of the day. I think the cats are keeping track of how much extra attention Lily gets because of her walks - ! - both of them made a point to spend some time with me today. Ruby wanted to have one of her little "chats" so I sat on the floor with her this morning and let her talk while I petted her and let her rub her head against me. Then tonight when I was about to leave, I took a minute to sit down on the couch and Lenny came running across the room to hop in my lap! So of course he got equal time petting. Very sweet, all three of them!
