Pet: Blue

posted on 07/31/2009 at 8:00 p.m. Pacific

It was still pretty hot but Blue seemed to be in the mood to walk - he turned east (guess he's bored with the park) and we had a slow but steady walk for about 45 minutes, following a meandering trail dictated by where we could find the most shade! When we got back I tried to get him to sit on the porch with me while I watered the plants but he just laughed at me and made it quite clear he preferred sitting by the fan. He's so funny when he is flat as a pancake but his tail is still wagging like crazy. It should be getting cooler every day now so maybe by Monday we'll be able to make up to see the chickens!

Lily and the horse

It cooled down nicely overnight so Lily and I had a great brisk walk this morning, which is good because it got really hot again during the day so we took it slow and short for the other two walks. On our evening walk Lily came across a sidewalk horse standing in a nice green lawn strip - she wasn't quite sure what to make of it! Lenny and Ruby are very hungry when it is mealtime, very sleepy the rest of the time.

A sleepy group today! (Wise response to the heat.) But Lily woke up for both visits and was enthusiastic about her walk, even though once she hit the street and realized how hot it was it slowed her down a little. But we did fine, just took it slow. She looks so pretty and shiny - she must have had a visit to the groomer! Lenny and Ruby are laying low but looked unsurprised to see me, and turned out to be pretty interested in dinner. All is well!

It's much cooler today, although that's a relative concept since we are still talking about mid-nineties! Blue and I made it to the park, where we had a nice time sitting on the grass and stalking squirrels (luckily for Blue that requires a minimum of movement, perfect for a hot day). The heat does not seem to be affecting his mood - he is his usual happy self!

Today both kitties got good brushings in preparation for your return! Even Lewis seemed to be very enthusiastic about it (once I got him to stop pawing at the back door.) Seriously, it is so hot today, he does NOT want to be outside, although I could not convince his kitty brain of that. They are both doing great, and will be glad to see you.

Hot Blue

We walked for 15 minutes, and Blue might have gone farther but I really think it was just out of habit because that is what he is used to doing with me - ! It was killer hot. It was even too hot to play "find it" when we got back to the house - Blue flopped down on the floor in front of the fan (see photo, and especially note the ear!) although he was quick to hop up if he thought there was any chance I was going to give him a treat. I watered the plant on the porch and spent some time telling him he was a beautiful boy, and called it a day after 30 min. Tomorrow will be pretty bad too, but maybe by Friday we'll be able to work up to a slightly longer walk - ! Hope so.

Penny on the tug

Penny really likes me to sit on the couch with her, and she waits patiently in the living room while I do the chores, with an expectant look on her face (see photo). Today was too hot to even sit on the couch, though, so I lay down flat on the living room floor, which the kitties found very curious! Penny came right over and sniffed me, rubbed her head against my hand, and then settled down right next to me. Lewis surveyed me for several minutes from across the room, then slowly came over, sniffed my hand, my arm, my face...then started rubbing his head against my head, to the point where he finally flopped over and started batting at my hair with his paws! Very funny. That's the most playful I've ever seen Lewis! They are unfazed by the heat, eating well, and seem to be doing great.

Pretty hot today, so I ran the air conditioner for a while when I was there. The kitties seem fine with the heat, except it apparently makes Lewis even more determined that he needs to be outside! Penny just wants attention, although she was too hot for brushing - just wanted a few pets and then to sit next to me. They were both very polite when I arrived - came to greet me and rub against my legs for a minute before they started eating - instead of heading straight to the food bowls like they usually do!

Both cats were waiting for me on the front porch - pretty relaxed but ready for a meal. After they ate they both seemed to want to just lounge around the house, so they are inside for the night. I know they will be so happy to welcome you home from your travels tomorrow!

Today is a really lovely day, just perfect temperature, so Cooper and I spent most of our visit on the deck - he just likes to have someone there beside him while he sprawls out. Beans couldn't decide if she wanted to stay in and eat (after a night outside) or come back out to enjoy the weather - they ended up both staying out. Probably smart, since I think it is supposed to be just as nice tomorrow!

posted on 07/24/2009 at 7:40 p.m. Pacific

Today Penny was the vocal one - I think she was just saying that she wanted attention, preferably brushing! All I have to do is hold the brush up, and she will brush herself (see photo). Lewis was quieter today, just looked at the back door a couple of times, but mostly interested in eating. They're doing fine, and I will see them again on Sunday!

The kitties basically traded places today - Beans out, Cooper in. Cooper really wanted some attention so he sat for a long time purring in my lap, and we watched Beans chasing bugs in the garden! I was kind of surprised since he had been out all night and usually he is ravenous when he comes in. Either he REALLY likes me or he found an alternate food source - ! - although when I finally got up to leave he did head straight over and start munching away, so I guess he really was hungry.

Lewis spent a lot of time and energy today talking to me about how it was really fine for him to go play in the backyard - ! - it was very funny, because his meows really did sound as if he was explaining something. He was being extra sweet and affectionate, especially if I got near the door. I suspect some kitty manipulation going on. Penny is fine, just wants to be brushed or petted. Much cooler today, probably why they were more active!

The kitties seemed kind of excited about going outside when I first got there, but then they decided they wanted to stay close to me for a while - even Beans wanted some petting. Finally Coop took off, then Beans, and soon there was no sign of either one. Then just as I was locking up to leave, Beans appeared again - guess she wants to have the house to herself for a while, without her brother hogging all the food! It's a lovely day, though, so I'm sure Cooper is having a great time out on his own.

Lewis continues to be fascinated with the door to the basement - ! - today he was very happy to eat but as soon as he was finished he went right to the door. He sits and stares at it, and occasionally paws at it if he thinks I am looking. I tried to get Penny to play with the yellow bird that hangs in the doorway, but she was too relaxed - it was getting kind of warm in the house - and preferred to just sit beside me on the couch and purr.

I visited mid-morning today, so Beans was ready to come in for some breakfast and Cooper was ready to go outside and enjoy the sun before it got too hot. He mostly rolled around on the warm gravel at the side of the house (both kitties seem to like it over there!) then came in and sat on my lap for a while. Beans curled up on the bed and both of them decided to stay in for the night.

But then she was very friendly and sat still for quite a lot of brushing. Lewis was again extremely interested in escaping into the basement! (see photo at back door) but he finally gave up and had a good brushing himself. They seem to be just fine!

According to Nicole, the kitties were happy to come in and greet her yesterday, and decided to spend the night indoors. So when I got there today, the food was all gobbled up! Beans had a quick snack before heading out, but Cooper stayed pretty close to me - I think he stepped one paw out onto the deck and felt how hot it was, and decided he was better off inside! Beans was not fazed, however, and took off to find some nice shady spot in the trees.

Blue on a walk

Today we had an earlier walk so got a lot farther than we did yesterday, although it still wasn't exactly what you would call cool this morning. Karen and Dash once again cancelled on us (I did get to meet Dash, though - what a cutie) so it was just me and the Blue Man. There were not even very many squirrels out, although we did get stalked by a cat, which Blue found very exciting. By the time we were finishing up it was warm enough that he needed several more rolls in the grass at the park - the grass was still damp from being watered earlier, so I think it felt extra good to him. He seems to be in good spirits and I think I tired him out pretty well, so he probably slept away the rest of the (very hot) day. Nicole takes over tomorrow, so no more update postings - but I know Blue will be happy to see you and will have lots to tell you when you get back!

The kitties were in a rush to get out the door when I got there - just time for a quick hello and they were gone. I didn't see much of them - I spent the time watering the tomatoes, which were looking pretty wilted - and then just as I was about to leave they both showed up ready to come back in out of the heat! Probably a good decision - it's pretty brutal out there today. They will be resting in their nice cool house!

Even at 10:00 a.m. it was getting pretty hot today, but Blue and I managed a good walk with several breaks for squirrel watching and one for rolling in the grass! (See photo.) Karen had to go to a meeting so we didn't get to walk with Dash, but we're hoping to connect tomorrow. Nicole stopped by to meet Blue and he was friendly and interested - she gave him a treat, so they are now pals. He seems to be doing great!

Today Nicole came with me to meet the kitties - they were mildly interested in her but mostly wanted to get outside to the yard! I showed her the routine so all should be well this weekend when she cares for them. Meanwhile, Cooper came back in after 10 minutes or so in the yard and sat on my lap while I tried to get a photo of him - which he thought was a fine game! His favorite part was batting at my cell phone with his paws.

Beans was on the front porch waiting for me, and Cooper appeared mysteriously as soon as I got out of my car. They didn't seem too surprised to see me, and anyway were more interested in lunch! After they ate Beans retired to your bedroom and curled up on the bed, and I sat down on the couch, where Cooper promptly curled up in my lap and refused to let me leave. It's gray and boring outside today, so they both decided to spend the evening indoors. Probably a good decision, since thunderstorms are predicted!

Lily on a walk

All of the kitties seem to prefer kibble to canned food today - a rare thing in the feline world! They all seem friendly and happy, they just don't seem that interested in the canned stuff. Winston is very fond of the soft treats (Purina Whisker Lickins) but he is the only one eating them (I haven't offered them to the others), and he also switches to kibble sometimes. I will email you tomorrow if they still are exhibiting odd eating patterns. Meanwhile, Lily is my reliable girl, happy to walk, loving her meals and treats!

I made this morning my 45-minute visit, since it was so nice and cool, and Lily and I had an extra long walk which she loved. Ruby was in a very friendly mood - I did not know she was such a talker! We had at least a 3-4 minute conversation: she would meow, and I would mimic the sound, and she would immediately reply with a slightly different meow, and on it went. I think she was telling me about life with two cat brothers and a dog...! Winston does not seem to be eating much unless he eats when I am not around, but he really loves to sit in my lap for at least a few minutes every visit. And Lenny is hoovering up whatever anyone else leaves behind, likes to have a bit of petting but way more interested in food!

Cooper watching a hummingbird

I went over early this morning so the kitties could escape into the lovely day, after being cooped up all night. Beans stayed around for a few pets and then took off, but Cooper as usual was happy to hang out with me on the deck. As we were sitting there a hummingbird suddenly appeared hovering right above us - so cool! - it watched us for several seconds then zoomed up to the top of the fir tree. Cooper was entranced - this photo was taken while he was still sort of looking around wondering what that was and where it went! You can see his paws are braced ready to pounce, but he quickly realized there was no longer anything to pounce on so he relaxed and went back to sunning himself. I didn't ruin his little dream by mentioning he'd have to move a lot faster than I've ever seen him move if he wants to come even close to a hummingbird!

A nice cool morning and both kitties wanted to stay close on the deck, taking turns getting brushed. Clarence apparently spent the day slinking around in the trees, since he came back this afternoon with pine needles in his coat! So he got a good brushing while Murphy finished her dinner. A dessert of greenies, and they are good for the night!

Pets: Emily and Claire

posted on 07/05/2009 at 8:10 p.m. Pacific

The first thing I saw when I opened the back door today was the accordion door to the basement open again - ! - and this time Emily appeared to be the only culprit, as Claire was in her usual position under the upstairs bed. I don't know how she does it - this time I tried to brace it with a broomstick I found in the basement, and blocked the door with the cat carrier - hope that works! Anyway, when I carried Emily upstairs she was purring like crazy, and she spent the rest of the visit lying in a sunbeam on the coffee table, purring with great satisfaction every time I came near her. Definitely a big kitty joke to her! Claire meanwhile stayed in place under the bed, with her pretty eyes blinking like "what is all this commotion??" They are both fine, and will be happy to see you (although they've been doing fine at entertaining themselves - and me - in your absence!)

posted on 07/04/2009 at 8:40 p.m. Pacific

Today when I arrived there were no kitties to greet me, and no kitties to be seen anywhere - ! I was mystified until I noticed that the door to the basement was open a crack. Sure enough, Emily was down there sitting on the bed, and as soon as she saw me she started telling me all about how it was her sister's idea and it wasn't her fault, she is a good girl! Meow meow meow meow. Claire of course was under the basement bed, and luckily when I crouched down and talked to her about maybe going upstairs, she agreed and shot up the stairs. I hadn't checked the door closely in my previous visits, though I do remember glancing at it the first day to confirm it was closed. Anyway, I tried to close it as tightly as possible, and we'll see if they have kitty skills to unfold an accordion door. Other than that - good visit with Emily, and Claire transferred from under the basement bed directly to under the upstairs bed!

Winston hiding in the cat tree

Tonight after my walk with Lily I couldn't find Winston, which kind of worried me since he never hides! I looked all over and called and finally found him all curled up at the bottom of the cat tree behind the door to the television cabinet - once I discovered him he decided to come out and see what Lenny was eating, so I guess he is okay, maybe just playing tricks on me. Everyone else is fine - still very hot, so Lily and I had a nice long morning walk and shorter walks the rest of the day. She moves slightly slower in the heat but doesn't seem too bothered. She noticed some fireworks going off while we were on our evening walk but was not at all alarmed, so she should have no problems tonight when things get going!

I really wanted to keep the kitties in tonight so they don't get scared by fireworks, and fortunately they seemed fine with that. Beans had been out all night and was happy to come in and gobble some food; Cooper spent some time out on the deck with me but was eager to come back in to make sure his sister didn't get all the food. So they are safe and sound inside!

I had Clarence stay inside today in case people got crazy with fireworks early in the day. He didn't seem to mind - it's very hot and I have a feeling he would have just slept on the deck all day anyway! He did go out for a while when I went back for the dinner visit but seemed happy to come back inside. The neighborhood is full of block parties - ! - every other street is blocked off. Murphy is celebrating the 4th by being extra hungry - the heat is not slowing down her appetite one bit.

Lily started the day off by rolling in something disgusting on our morning walk - ! - that little dickens. She was quite pleased with herself. Easily cleaned up though - I managed to stop her before she got too filthy. The spot on her side is about the same, and I have noticed her acting like it itches - but it's not inflamed or anything. She is happy as ever, always sound asleep when I get there but wakes right up and is ready for fun. The kitties are all good - Winston and Lenny took turns sitting in my lap, and Ruby pretends like she is scared of me but I think she just uses that as an excuse to run around the apartment, because if I get close to her she will let me pet her and purrs away. It's very hot still so Lily and I have our longest walks in the morning, but the apartment is cool and everyone is comfortable.

Exactly as you predicted, Emily came right to the door to greet me, and Claire spent my visit hiding under the bed (I checked to make sure she was all right). Emily was very friendly and helpful - she hopped up on the counter to aid me in checking my notes; confirmed that the cat food was indeed in the cupboard where it was supposed to be (she went inside the cupboard to make sure); and tested the cat food to be certain it was delicious (it must have been, since after I filled the dish I lost my little assistant because she was busy gobbling up kibble.) They are doing fine, and I look forward to maybe having a real Claire sighting tomorrow!

Cooper rolling in the sun

I meant to make this a longer visit today, but both kitties seemed to want to be out in the hot afternoon sun on their own, so I will wait for another day when they feel more like having company. Beans came in long enough to gobble some food (she had been out all night) and Cooper headed right out after saying hello and showing me how much he likes rolling around in the sun. When last seen, he was sitting blissfully on the hot sidewalk between the house and the garage; Beans was keeping to the shade in the back but had zero interest in the lovely cool house!

The kitties took turns today hopping into my lap as soon as I sat down to write my notes - Murphy got me in the morning, and Clarence on the afternoon visit. Pretty sweet, both little purr machines (well, actually, Clarence is a LARGE purr machine.) I think they're starting to crave human company, so it's good timing that I heard this afternoon that Tom will be spending tonight at your house! The kitties will be very happy, even more so if they can scam a second dinner out of him...

Ivy was in a very playful mood today. We have our upstairs game, which is chasing the feather toy across the couch and over the ottoman, and our basement game, which is batting at the little mouse from inside her kitty house. The funny thing about that is the way she seems to prefer to bat at the mouse without being able to see it - she keeps her face hidden inside the house and just puts her paw out, doesn't try to look, just waves around until she hits something. Fun kitty game I guess!

She's always so happy to just trot along and see what's going on and who is around! Clarence hiding in the grass

I put a little bowl of water on the deck in hopes of keeping Murphy from attempting to roam - it definitely caught her interest, and she much prefers that water to the nice big bowl in the kitchen (I find that to be true of a lot of cats and dogs - maybe it is a remnant of their wild animal pasts?!) Meanwhile Clarence cracked me up by hiding in the grass and meowing at some little birds perched on the fence - I guess he thought he could convince them to hop down in front of him, as he certainly had no interest in stirring himself to go after them.

Then Cooper sat on my lap on the couch - he seemed kind of glad to be in out of the heat - while Beans took off again. She certainly has a lot of exploring to do! Cooper ended up staying in - I think he may be one of those cats who turns into a big flat puddle when it gets hot!
