Pets: Murphy and Clarence

posted on 06/30/2009 at 8:10 p.m. Pacific

For some reason Murphy really wanted to be outside today, and every time she got out the door she headed for the neighbor’s yard - ! – so I spent a lot of time going after her and luring her back to the house. Not sure what she is thinking! Luckily she is easily distracted by feline greenies. Clarence is fine – disappeared for a day of adventure but back in plenty of time for dinner.

Lily ready for a walk

Everyone seems fine on the first full day of your trip. All are eating heartily, and Lily and I are having a good time exploring the neighborhood. (See photo for her "Is it time for a walk?" look.) Today she had some celery for a special treat - so cute! This evening Lenny wanted lots of petting so I sat with him for a while, and he purred and purred - such a sweetheart.

Lots of playing today. It is so funny how she waits until the toy is just out of sight before going after it – she is a patient girl! She also can’t be fooled by spatial tricks. If I move the mousie one way around the ottoman, she knows she can intercept it by going the opposite way! A very big brain for such a sweet little kitten.

The kitties had no hesitation in heading to the yard today – they didn't even really stop to say hello! Although Cooper did sit with me on the deck for a while as usual. I met your neighbor on the west side - very nice, and he's keeping an eye on things! I also did some watering in the garden - it's been sunny ever since you left, so things are a little dry.

Everyone was sleeping when I arrived this afternoon, but when Lily realized I was there, she was ready to walk! It was a gorgeous day so we had a great walk. Kitties got some crunchies, although I only saw Winston and Ruby. Then this evening everyone was much more alert - ready for dinner! All had good appetites, although of course Winston had a lot to say about the matter. Nice evening walk with Lily, and Lenny let me give him a few pets to say hello. All is well!

Murphy sunning outside

The kitties have the morning routine down – eat breakfast quickly and then go enjoy the sun! Here is a picture of Murphy soaking it up and looking blissful. They are doing well – Clarence spent the day outside as usual, and then came in to try to steal Murphy’s dinner as usual. It’s been pretty warm so I’ve been watering every day, and I think so far everything is surviving and thriving!

At first Ivy only wanted to sit in my lap and be petted, so we did that for quite a while. Then we played with the little mouse toy I gave her. She started out being much more interested in the ring on the end of the string than she was in the mouse! But once I convinced her that I am supposed to hold the ring in my hand and make the mouse bounce, she did think that was pretty fun. She did some very fancy leaps going after that thing! And then she would hide in her little kitty house and jump out at it. VERY cute. She makes the funniest little noise when she is playing – sort of a high pitched half-purr half-growl. It’s basically the opposite of fierce but probably in her mind she is being ferocious.

Today we had a longer visit, which worked out well! The kitties said hello to me – even Beans stayed around for some petting – then took off to check out the yard while I did chores and watered plants. Then I called them and they appeared from wherever it is they go, and Cooper hung out with me on the deck while Beans stayed nearby in the yard. It’s beautiful weather, and they are both enjoying it to the max!

Pets: Murphy and Clarence

This morning we all sat on the deck after breakfast - Clarence watching from the shade while Murphy and I soaked up the sun. He stayed out all day, then came in for a brushing session while Murphy had dinner. They are fine - seem very content!

Now Ivy heads straight upstairs and waits for me - no more overseeing my chores! We played for a while with the feather toy, then just sat on the couch while she purred. When I take her back to her safe cave she gets EXTRA sweet, rubs against my feet, purrs and purrs, and yes, I fall for it and spend more time with her! She's pretty irresistible.

Beans lies down outside

Beans was relaxing in the sun on the front porch when I arrived this afternoon, and Cooper came running across the front yard when he saw me drive up. Hungry kitties! They took turns gobbling up some food, and then Beans went back out to roll around on the concrete/gravel pathway in the back (why not choose the grass?!) while Cooper stayed close to me for some petting. They both decided to stay inside when I left - I think they were looking for dinner: Second Course.

It's a beautiful day so Beans took off like a shot as soon as I opened the door - she didn't go far, but she really wanted to be in the yard! Cooper preferred hanging out with me on the deck, rolling around in the sunshine. Your yard looks wonderful, and what a perfect kitty playground!

The weather is sunny and warm so Clarence was happy to spend the day outside, and Murphy and I had some quality time after he went out. She has the sweetest purr when you pet her, kind of a purr-purr-squeak! When I got back this afternoon Clarence was ready to come in for dinner - he gobbled his little portion, and then I had to keep brushing him to distract him from trying to steal Murphy's. They're both doing great.

Today Ivy spent most of our visit in the living room - she likes to be on the couch. I'm sure it reminds her of her people, not to mention how comfortable it is! She's doing fine, very playful and affectionate. Here she is with her magic wand - I think she is trying to cast a spell so I will put the camera away.

Today Ivy came upstairs with me - I think she was looking around for all of her people! But she got bored with that pretty quickly and then started to show me how she can roll around on the carpet. Sort of like: "Oh well, they're gone, hey look how cute I am when I do this!" She again wanted to spend as much time as possible purring in my lap, but she also supervised all of my chores (at least the indoor ones) and spent what seemed like a REALLY long time twitching her tail and staring at a string toy I was flipping around for her - she never did pounce but she was quite focused on her surveillance. She's doing great!

Clarence on porch

Two napping kitties when I arrived this afternoon, but Murphy immediately woke up and started telling me how hungry she was. So first things first, feed Murph! Clarence had a bite to eat too, then ventured out onto the patio for some fresh air while Murphy cleaned his plate. I told Clarence how handsome he is so he agreed to pose for a photo on the porch steps, although you can see he would rather I would go back to brushing him. All is well, and I'll be back to see them in the morning!

When I arrived, it was very quiet in Ivy's room - no sign of a kitty! I called her name, heard a bit of rustling, then went about scooping the litter box - pretty soon she came peeking out from the shelves. Ivy working on a stringI don't know if she had been sleeping there or if she hid when she heard me come in! But once she got a good look at me she came out and purred and rubbed against me and was sweet as can be. We played a little bit but she mostly wanted to sit in my lap and be petted. She also likes to be brushed! In this picture she is working on getting the ring attached to the string off - she kind of looks like a little bear. She seems just fine, and everything else is good at the house now that we have solved the problem of the chirping smoke alarm (thanks Chris!)
