Pet: Paka

posted by Angie on 01/31/2010 at 7:25 p.m. Pacific

Today was another two visit day for Paka, and it was sunny so she had lots to watch out the window. After my experiment with my hand under the rug, I tried playing with the blue fur toy under the rug, and she loved it! She pounced on the ball as the lump moved under the rug and couldn't get enough. We did, though, spend some time on the couch with me petting and Paka purring (her specialty). While she purred, she squinted her eyes and emitted that special "snooze gas" that had me hypnotized in her thrall. She'll be so happy to see you in a couple of days!

Today I brought my husband Ross along on my visit, much to the delight of Kiku and Jackson! Ross met them before at the old house, but I thought it would be good for him to see the layout at the new place just in case he ever needs to do emergency backup. And I also thought the kitties were getting a little bored with just my company! Anyway, the boys were thrilled, and spent the entire visit either in his lap or showing him the wonders of the basement sink. Stella was curious and observed from afar, but being a bit more cautious, she held back. They're all doing just fine, although I know they will be VERY happy to have their people back.

Pet: Paka

posted by Angie on 01/30/2010 at 8:35 p.m. Pacific

Paka was feeling playful today, so our petting time was short and chasing the leaf time was long. While I was checking the plants, she let me know I needed to be playing with her by doing her signature drop and roll on the kitchen rug. So I wiggled a leaf, which she especially enjoyed batting, belly in the air, then I got the idea of hiding part of the leaf under the kitchen rug and moving it around. It turned out she preferred attacking my hand under the rug to playing with the leaf! So we have a new game. We'll see if she still likes it tomorrow.

The rain must have brought out lots of new smells, because Lily was especially absorbed in the olfactory smorgasbord of our walks. She met a silken terrier she liked quite a bit, but wasn't keen on a pit bull mix she saw. The cats spent much of the day catching up on their beauty sleep, but this evening they were really playful. Ruby chased a twist tie around the living room, then batted at some crinkled paper. Lenny was mostly interested in watching her from the cozy vantage point of my lap.

Kiku on a lap

posted by Robin on 01/30/2010 at 8:35 p.m. Pacific

Playful kitties today! I got both Kiku and Stella jumping at the feather toy, and Jackson spent an extra long time being fascinated by running water. They all took turns sitting in my lap, even Stella, and while Jackson was taking his turn Kiku thumped around the house chasing a piece of string. At one point I lay down on my back on the living room floor, and Kiku ran straight over and pinned me down (you may be able to discern his triumphant look in this photo) - I thought I was going to be there all night, but I finally convinced him to let me up.

Pets: Jackson, Kiku, & Stella

posted by Robin on 01/29/2010 at 8:40 p.m. Pacific

The kitties definitely know the schedule now - both Jackson and Kiku were waiting for me in the front window! Then we adjourned to the couch, where I had a lap full of orange cats (Stella preferred to watch her silly brothers acting all undignified - she has too much class for such behavior.) They continue to seem a bit bored with their toys, so I got down the two little rolly balls, and Jackson smacked them around while Stella and Kiku watched - quite an impressive display, or at least he thought so!

I think Paka's favorite move is the "drop and roll." She takes every possible opportunity to hit the deck and display her beautiful tummy, whether it's when I'm watering plants, or writing a note, or sitting down to play with her. Today she sat in my lap and groomed that belly to show its full magnificence. We also played leaf again and had lots of girl talk on the couch. She's being a very good girl and using her litter box very consistently.

January is finally making itself felt again, but Lily still found lots to sniff on our walks today. She made friends with two Dachshunds and a Rottweiler mix, too--lots of tail wagging. Lenny was his regular suave self. I think he might be Fred Astaire reincarnated. Ruby channels Gloria Swanson, except when she's doing some goofy Jean Arthur. But enough of the old movie references! Everyone is doing great.

posted by Robin on 01/28/2010 at 9:50 p.m. Pacific

No sun this afternoon, and the kitties seemed less active - maybe they were in hibernation mode! They are such nice greeters, though. Jackson and Kiku tried to share my lap (with some pushing involved) and Stella sat close by my head on the back of the couch. Everyone seems to be eating (and digesting!) fine, and we played a little bit, and then they all settled down for naps.

Another two-visit day! Paka was happy to have the curtains open - no utility crews today, but it was very windy and she liked watching the tree branches moving around. She also did lots of rolling, purring, and squeaking! She was in a predatory mood today - lots of crouching and tail-twitching while she stalked her leaf. She's doing great - such a sweetheart!

Pet: Paka

posted by Angie on 01/27/2010 at 10:15 p.m. Pacific

Paka purred for 30 minutes straight today. She started purring when I walked in the door, purred right through her dinner, play time, and lots of pets, and continued purring while I picked her up--which she seems to love--and walked around with her. In the whole time you've been gone, she's only had one accident outside her litter box, too. She's a darling little pixie of a kitten. We did have to pick a new leaf off her favorite plant, since she shredded the last one, and she wants me to let you know she's not keen on the dental treats you left, but other than that she's doing well.

Jackson and Kiku both jumped on the couch to sit with me and say hello, but I guess Stella only does that on the first day! She watched patiently, waiting for the chance to begin the hunt. Jackson did crazy rollovers on the back of the couch, purring like a lawn mower the whole time, and Kiku was happy to just sit in my lap. Later we played with the wind-up crab - both Kiku and Stella watched it with interest, but Jackson just walked up to it and grabbed it between his teeth! He's not much for subtlety when it comes to hunting.

Pet: Paka

posted by Robin on 01/26/2010 at 9:20 p.m. Pacific

Paka's lucky day - two visits! I took the morning shift and had a nice long visit with her. She realized that I was a new audience, so she immediately started showing me how well she can roll over! I opened the curtains to let the sun in, and also to let Paka watch a utility crew climbing on the power pole across the street - she was fascinated. She was also interested in breakfast and in sitting on my lap - she seemed to prefer being petted to playing with toys - and I swear she purred the entire time I was there! Angie visited this afternoon and reports that Paka enjoyed watching the neighborhood all day and was very happy to have two visitors.

The kitties clearly remembered that last time I visited, I was dishing up wet cat food! They headed straight for the kitchen and gave me their sad hungry faces. They adapted quickly when they realized wet food wasn't on the agenda, however, and we all sat on the couch together to say hello, then headed to the basement so Kiku could have fresh food and Jackson could play water games in the sink. Then, of course, time for Stella to hunt flying feather objects! Jackson went to sit in the sun in the front window, where he could keep an eye on his brother and sister as well as the neighborhood.

Pet: Paka

posted by Angie on 01/25/2010 at 6:20 p.m. Pacific

Paka is a people cat if I ever met one. Today she insisted I carry her around the house and show her things. I showed her out the window, the bookshelf (she was very interested in the C.S. Lewis series featuring a Lion with magical powers), and the candles on the fireplace mantel. Then she sat in my lap and purred while I made up nicknames for her. I think her favorites were Paka the Petite Puss and Paka the Pocket-Sized Pet. We finished up the visit with a session on the floor with the leaf.

Paka posing

Pet: Paka

posted by Angie on 01/24/2010 at 8:05 p.m. Pacific

Paka met me at the door today with little squeals of greeting. She only wanted a few minutes of lap time before she leapt up on the trunk in the living room to display her lovely belly and tempt me to pet it. I was skeptical, having been victim of the furry booby trap in the past, but she liked having her belly rubbed! We played with the leaf, then with the blue fur on a stick, then Paka just wanted me to pet her and tell her she's pretty. I took a few photos--she likes to pose--but they came out kind of blurry. Here's one.

Pet: Paka

posted by Angie on 01/23/2010 at 7:10 p.m. Pacific

My first day with Paka! Paka's first step in getting to know me was to get to know my lap. I don't like to brag, but my lap seems to possess everything Paka requires, including warmth, soft padding, and proximity to hands that like to pet darling cats like her. After an extended kitty massage period, we changed gears and played with the leaf for a while. All that playing seem to fire up her appetite, and at the end of our visit she went in the other room to settle down to dinner.

Pet: Miso

posted by Robin on 01/15/2010 at 4:45 p.m. Pacific

Miso was back in top playing form today, pretty much ignoring her food, at least while I was there to play with! We made up a new game wherein she sits on the kitchen chair and I wind the spider-on-a-string through the slats on the back, and she rolls around batting at the spider and the string and generally looks very silly. Safe travels home - I know that kitty girl will be so happy to see you!

Miso eating

Pet: Miso

posted by Robin on 01/13/2010 at 7:30 p.m. Pacific

We had some fun playing, but Miso was extremely focused on her food today - she had eaten almost everything from my last visit! I added some fresh kibble to the big container before I filled her dish, and she came running when she heard the sound. I thought she looked so cute while she was eating - a furry lump with a tail and ears! I told her you will be home in a few days and you will play with her whenever she wants, so...be ready.

Pet: Miso

posted by Robin on 01/11/2010 at 6:45 p.m. Pacific

Today I tried out the little mouse toy that squeaks with Miso - she was very intrigued but I think it also freaked her out a bit. She would watch it carefully, creep up next to it, and then suddenly run away as if it was going to chase her! So we went back to the feather toy, which she hunted with extra energy. I think if Miso were left to her own devices in the great outdoors, she would probably be more likely to hunt birds than mice!

Miso waiting for wet food

Miso is back to enjoying the wrist strap on my camera, and also my pink gloves (pink apparently makes her attack!) She was mostly interested in her wet food, however - you can see from the photo that she is waiting intently for me to dish it up, casting meaningful glances at the cans on the counter where her feast awaits. She had dragged the spider toy off the counter and down to the floor, so I guess she has been doing some solitary hunting when I'm not there!

The pets all seemed very relaxed and happy today - I think they were happy to have you home, even if just for overnight! Ruby likes to chase her new pink mousie, Lenny is enjoying the tunnel, and Lily had a good long mid-day walk before the rains started. Tonight everyone had a hearty dinner, and they're all settled in, looking forward to having you home again tomorrow night!

Pet: Miso

posted by Robin on 01/07/2010 at 5:45 p.m. Pacific

There was a big power outage today in parts of North, Northeast, and downtown Portland (a substation fire near the Fremont Bridge), but everything seemed to be in working order at your house. Miso gave the spider a few swats and spent a little while looking out at the parking lot, but mostly today she was again on a serious campaign to bring down that feather toy! She can be very single-minded. She was also quite excited to get fresh wet food, which is interesting because mostly she entirely ignores food when I'm there. I guess all that hunting works up a powerful appetite!

Pet: Miso

posted by Robin on 01/05/2010 at 8:55 p.m. Pacific

Miso was not so interested in the spider today - today it was all about the feather toy! She loves it when I slip the feather under the glass of the coffee table - she runs from side to side to attack. She also sat in front of the television for the longest time - does she have a favorite show she wants me to turn on??? Or maybe that is just a good post from which to observe the entire house. She's doing great - tons of huntress energy!

Lily and the celery stalk

Pets: Lily, Lenny, and Ruby

posted by Robin on 01/05/2010 at 8:55 p.m. Pacific

Lily has really gotten it into her head that the couch is her territory after her walk - her chance to snuggle and get extra petting! Lenny is not thrilled with this development, since he had previously staked out the couch for himself. I finally tempted Lily with a celery stalk to distract her (you can see from the photo how intent she was on sinking her teeth into its crunchy goodness.) Ruby remains above the fray, watching over her minions from whatever perch she decides is best - until you get her talking, and then she of course has lots to say, and she likes to say it while attempting to stand on her head!

Pets: Lily, Lenny, and Ruby

posted by Angie on 01/04/2010 at 9:15 p.m. Pacific

There are few things I love seeing more than Lily's floppy-eared dash and slide down the hall when I come in the door, unless it's Lenny purring on my lap, or Ruby showing her Cirque du Soleil moves as she tosses her wire toy in the air. Everyone was up to their regular tricks today. Lily chased squirrels on our walks, Lenny hogged the food bowls and rushed the couch whenever I sat down, and Ruby was generally queenly (although she did make sure to get her fair share of the day's meals, too!). They all look great.

Pet: Blue

posted by Robin on 01/04/2010 at 9:15 p.m. Pacific

Today it was almost raining too hard even for squirrels, but finally Blue spotted a couple in a tree at the park and I swear he watched them for 10 minutes, despite the water that was running down his face like tear drops. (Or maybe he really was crying, because the squirrels wouldn't come down where he could catch them.) Then he got bored with them and took me on a very energetic spin through the neighborhood, so he got a nice workout. My favorite part of the whole visit was when we got back to the house and he completely buried his face and head in the stack of towels on the porch, while I was drying off his back and legs - he clearly knows what the towels are there for! What a good boy to be able to dry his own face and head. As usual, I loved walking the big guy - happy to help out anytime!

Lenny the tuxedoed greeter at the door

posted by Robin on 01/03/2010 at 8:55 p.m. Pacific

Every time I get ready to leave, one of these three does something overwhelmingly cute, so I can't tear myself away and end up staying longer! I think they've worked out a secret signal between themselves. They all are doing well, and it was dry all day so Lily got some good walks in. Angie visited the tribe later in the day, and reported that Ruby was extra spunky tonight! She ran around the living room and scratched at her post, then dashed across the room and jumped on a chair. She was hilarious. Lily met two puppies and was very friendly with them, and Lenny is now the door-greeter for the house - how fitting for his nice tuxedo outfit!

Pet: Miso

posted by Robin on 01/03/2010 at 8:55 p.m. Pacific

Miso played a little but was mostly interested in looking out the windows today - she alternated between the front room and the bedroom. I don't know what she was looking at - I couldn't see anything special! She was also feeling affectionate, which she expresses by sitting close, batting at my hands, and giving me tiny (painless) nips.

Today, thankfully, was mostly dry, and Lily and I made the most of it on our walks. So many squirrels out today! After our walks, I settled on the couch, where Lenny usually made a beeline for my lap, until Lily jumped out for a few pets, too, and scared him away. Ruby has seemed particularly feisty and has darted down the hall a few times to show me how fast she is.

Ruby by the basket

posted by Robin on 01/01/2010 at 9:15 p.m. Pacific

It was great to see these three this morning! Lily and I had the good luck of catching a dry period between downpours so we had a nice long walk. Ruby was hiding when I first arrived but after my walk with Lily she appeared and was in a very talkative and playful mood! She kept rubbing against the toy basket, so I pulled out the pull-string-mousie and ran it around the room for her, which she loved. Lenny waited around until I was ready to sit on the couch with him for a while - he was interested in the mousie, but mostly wanted to cuddle. Angie saw them later in the day, and reports that all is well!
